분류체계
썩은 나무를 먹고사는 초식성 개미이다. 크기는 5-6mm이다. 몸은 연하며, 머리는 검은 갈색이고, 더듬이, 다의 넓적마디 등은 갈색이다. 날개는 흑갈색이고, 날개맥은 색이 짙다. 앞날개와 뒷날개는 모양과 크기가 거의 같다. 생식개미는 날개가 있고, 단단하며, 색깔이 있는 몸과 겹눈을 가지고 있는데 분산비행 후에는 날개가 떨어진다. 여왕개미는 몸길이가 1~2cm이나 산란을 시작하면 배가 커져서 길이 11cm에 이른다. 일개미의 몸은 흰색에 가까운 연한 색이다. 병정개미는 몸이 심하게 각질화되어 있으며, 머리 형태가 다양하고, 일개미보다 덩치가 크며, 겹눈은 매우 작거나 없다. 여왕개미는 1년간 수만-수십만 개의 알을 낳는데, 산란 후에는 아무것도 먹지 않고 알을 품는다. 우리나라와 일본에서 서식한다.
