Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758 (양봉꿀벌)

양봉에 이용하는 꿀벌과 절지동물이다. 몸길이는 12mm 정도의 중형이며, 몸길이는 12mm 내외이다. 몸은 전체적으로 회황색 긴 털로 덮여 있다. 머리는 갈색빛이 도는 검은색으로 전체적으로 회황색 털이 나 있는데, 겹눈에도 빽빽하게 나 있다. 정수리를 중심으로 양옆의 뒤쪽 홑눈과 겹눈 사이는 털이 없다. 가슴은 암황갈색으로 회황색 긴 털이 밀생하며, 배는 제1, 2배마디가 적갈색이나 그 뒷가두리에는 검은색 얇은 띠무늬가 있으며, 제3배마디부터는 검은색을 띠며 각 마디의 뒷가두리에 회황색 털이 나 있어 띠무늬가 있는 것처럼 보인다. 번식시기는 4~6월로 어른벌레가 되면 하면을 했다가 10월 중순 이후 나타나기 시작하여 크게 무리 지어 월동지로 이동한다. 화분매개를 비롯하여 물질이용 등 사람에게 매우 유익한 곤충이다.
