전국에 흔하게 서식하는 네발나비과 곤충이다. 날개 편 길이는 43~53mm이다. 날개는 주황색 바탕에 검은색 무늬가 발달한다. 앞날개 시정부는 검은색을 띠며, 흰색 무늬가 다수 있다. 뒷날개 아랫면은 녹색빛 도는 황갈색 무늬가 복잡하게 있으며, 아와연부를 따라 황갈색 테두리로 둘러져 있는 검은색 무늬가 있다. 큰멋쟁이나비와 유사하나 뒷날개 윗면 중앙부가 주황색을 띠고, 무늬가 있어 구별된다. 연간 수회 발생하며, 4-11월에 나타난다. 성충으로 월동한다. 장거리 이동을 하는 종으로 알려져 있고, 가을에 코스모스 군락에서 많은 개체를 볼 수 있다.   • 연 수회 발생하며, 4월부터 11월에 걸쳐 나타난다. 성충으로 월동한다. 평지나 산지뿐만 아니라 도시공원, 수변 지역 등 어디서나 볼 수 있으며, 다양한 꽃에 모이나 수액에는 모이지 않는다. 먹이식물은 국화과에 속하는 우엉, 수레국화, 떡쑥, 사철쑥이다. [2]
