메뚜기목 메뚜기과에 속하는 곤충이다. 몸길이는 수컷 45~52mm, 암컷 75~82mm 정도로 대형이며, 암컷이 훨씬 크다. 몸 색은 변이가 심하다. 머리 앞부분이 뾰족하고, 더듬이는 짧고, 칼 모양으로 납작하다. 성충은 8~10월경 풀밭에서 흔히 발견되며, 날 때 “딱딱딱딱…” 하는 날개 부딪히는 소리를 낸다. 우리나라 전역에 서식하며, 아시아, 유럽, 아프리카 등지에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]
