수컷의 몸길이는 25mm 정도이고, 암컷의 몸길이는 42mm 정도로 암컷이 훨씬 크다. 대부분 녹색형이지만 회녹색형, 갈색형도 나타난다. 몸은 뚜렷한 방추형이다. 머리는 원추형으로 길며 이마는 강하게 경사진다. 방아깨비의 축소형처럼 보인다. 두정돌기는 더듬이 사이에서 삼각형으로 돌출한다. 더듬이는 두꺼운 실 모양으로 몸길이보다 항상 짧다. 앞가슴복판에 뚜렷한 돌기가 있다. 앞날개는 가늘고 길며 뒷날개는 투명한 연황색이다. 수컷은 암컷의 등에 올라타 장시간에 걸쳐 함께 지내며 짝짓기를 한다. 여러 가지 식물질을 먹는다. 풀밭에서 6~10월에 걸쳐 흔히 발견된다. 한반도 전역에 분포하는 고유종이다. 중국 북부, 일본, 대만에도 분포한다.
