분류체계
개불은 전 세계적으로 한국에서 가장 유명하다. 크기는 수축 정도에 따라 변화가 심한데, 길이가 15cm 정도의 원통형 몸을 가지고 있다. 몸의 색깔은 살구색 또는 붉은빛이 도는 유백색으로 피부에는 미세한 피부돌기들이 돋아 있다. 한국, 중국, 일본 등에서 식용하는데 특히 한국에서 가장 많이 소비된다. 보통 모래진흙 속에 U자 모양의 구멍을 파고 산다. 연중 잡히지만 수온이 차가워지는 때에 배에 끌개를 달아 바다 속 펄 바닥을 끌어서 잡는데 남해안에서 많이 난다. 최근 소비량이 증가하면서 중국에서 살아 있는 개불이 수입되고 있다. 이 속에는 전 세계적으로 4종이 밝혀져 있다. 조간대 하부에서 조하대 수심 10m 내외의 모래진흙 바닥에 U자형 구멍을 파고 산다. 생식시기는 12~1월(또는 3~4월)로 알려져 있으며, 자웅이체이고 수정은 암컷의 몸 밖에서 이루어진다. 여름철에는 1m 이상 구멍 깊숙이 파고들어가 있다가 수온이 내려가는 시기에는 위로 올라온다. [1]
