껍질 크기는 길이 120mm, 높이 90mm 정도이다. 껍질은 얇으나 단단하고, 각정(殼頂)에서부터 폭넓은 방사륵이 42~43개 뻗어 있고 흑갈색 인편상 각피가 나타난다. 껍질 안쪽 면은 백색이고, 외연을 따라 치상벽이 발달하며 표면의 방사륵 흔적이 나타난다. 교치는 빗 모양으로 양 끝으로 갈수록 커진다. 수심 10~50m 깊이의 모래와 진흙이 혼합된 지역에 서식한다. 국내 전 연안과 일본, 중국, 타이완, 러시아 연안에 분포한다. 수산 식용 자원 및 신소재 재료로의 가치가 높은 종이다. [저작재산권자]
