Psammechinus intermedius A. Agassiz, 1863
몸통은 반구 모양이며, 구부(口部) 쪽이 편평하고, 높이가 몸통 지름의 약 1/2을 약간 넘는다. 체색은 어두운 녹색 또는 어두운 자색을 띠거나 갈색에서 자색까지 다양하다. 보대공은 5열로 세로로 배열해 있으며, 5개 보대공마다 경사져서 굽어져 있고, 몸통의 적도부에서는 활모양을 이루고 있다. 보대(步帶)의 폭은 간보대(間步帶) 폭의 약 2/3에 해당하며, 구부(口部) 쪽에서 보대의 폭은 간보대 폭보다 약간 넓다. 냉대 해역에 서식하는 종으로 우리나라 동해안의 조간대 하부에서부터 수심 35m에 주로 서식하고 있다. 산란기는 보통 7~8월이다. 한국과 일본에서는 이 종의 몸통의 안쪽, 5개의 간보대 위치에 발달해 있는 생식선을 날 것으로 먹기도 한다. 한국, 일본, 사할린, 블라디보스토크에 분포한다.
