몸길이는 성체가 15.5m, 최대 몸무게는 20~25톤이다. 등지느러미는 높고 낫 모양으로 등 한가운데에서 솟아 있어 긴수염고래와 구별이 가능하다. 브라이드고래는 물속에서 숨을 잘 내 뿜기 때문에 수면 밖으로 나와서도 물기둥을 볼 수 없는 경우가 많다. 체색은 등이 흑회색이며 배는 희다. 40~70개의 주름은 배꼽까지 이른다. 한쪽에 250~370개 나 있는 수염판은 회색이다. 단독 또는 2마리로 다니는 것이 일반적이다. 먹이를 먹는 해역에서는 10~20마리의 무리를 이루는 경우도 있다. 특별히 정해진 번식시기 없이 출산은 연중 이루어진다. 어류와 무척추 해양 동물을 먹는다. 열대와 아열대 해양에 분포한다. 남북 40도 이상의 고위도지역에서는 회유하지 않는다.   • 단독 또는 2마리로 다니는 것이 일반적이다. 먹이를 먹는 해역에서는 10~20마리의 무리를 이루는 경우도 있다. 다른 긴수염고래류와는 달리 브라이드고래는 많은 해역에서 연중 출산이 이루어진다. 무리를 이룬 어류를 쫓아 돌진하면서 먹으며, 때로는 방향을 바꾸어 돌진하는 행동을 보이기도 한다. 먹이는 어류와 무척추 해양동물이다. [1]
