성체 암컷은 2.3m, 수컷은 2.6m에 이른다. 체중은 135kg까지 기록이 있다. 몸매는 약간 가늘며, 주둥이는 중간부터 앞으로 길게 뻗어 있다. 등지느러미는 높고 약간 낫 모양을 하고 있다. 체색은 등은 짙은 다색을 띤 회색, 복부는 흰색이다. 몸 옆구리에는 황갈색 또는 황토색의 무늬가 있다. 상하 턱에는 작고 뾰족한 이빨이 40~61개 있다. 큰 무리를 이뤄 질주하고, 수면에 물거품을 내는 광경을 자주 관찰할 수 있다. 무리가 공동으로 채식 행동을 하는 일도 있다. 대개 야간에 채식활동을 한다. 외양성으로 전 세계의 열대에서 온대 해역에 널리 분포한다. 북대서양에서는 북위 60도 이남, 북태평양에서는 북위 50도 이남 및 남반구에서 남위 50도 이북에 분포한다. 대 무리를 이뤄 소란스럽게 고속으로 대양을 질주하고 수면 위에 물거품을 내는 광경을 자주 관찰할 수 있다. 무리의 크기는 수 십 마리에서 10,000마리를 넘는 경우도 있다. 다른 해양포유동물과 함께 헤엄친다. 활발하고 역동적으로 행동하며, 저위도 해역에서 항해하는 배에게는 가장 친숙한 돌고래이다. 출산 시기는 봄과 가을 혹은 여름으로 보고된 바 있다. 먹이사냥에서는 무리가 공동으로 채식행동을 하는 일도 있다. 대개 야간에 채식하고, 어두워지면 수면 가까이 이동하여 오는 심부확산층 생물을 먹는다. 작은 군집성 어류 및 오징어를 먹는다.
