잉어목 잉어과에 속하는 어류이다. 붕어와 비슷하지만 몸높이가 비교적 낮고 몸이 전반적으로 길쭉하다. 머리가 작고, 큰 눈이 머리의 양옆으로 붙어 있다. 입은 다소 위쪽을 향하고, 수염이 없다. 비늘 가장자리에 검은 반점들이 있어서 몸이 전체적으로 검은빛을 띤다. 다 자란 암컷은 노란빛이 나고 번식기의 수컷은 어두운 갈색에 가깝다. 저수지와 하천의 얕은 곳 표면층 가까이에서 떼를 지어 살며, 잡식성으로 부착조류, 수서곤충과 작은 동물을 먹는다. 수질오염에 비교적 내성이 강하며, 산란기는 5~6월이다. 전국의 민물에 산다. 세계적으로는 중국, 타이완, 일본에 분포한다.
