분류체계
우리나라에서는 동해로 흐르는 하천을 제외한 대부분의 담수지역에 살며, 중국, 대만, 일본에도 분포한다. 몸길이는 6~8cm 정도이다. 하천 중, 하류의 흐름이 느리고 수초가 많은 지역이나 저수지에서 발견된다. 하천의 바닥이나 수초 옆에서 먹이를 잡아먹으며, 동식물질을 혼식한다(內田, 1939). 산란기는 5~6월로 추정되며 이매패인 Unionidae의 체내에 산란한다. 알은 구형이며 산란수는 34개 정도이다. 부화 후 만 1년에 4~5cm, 2년에 6~8cm까지 성장한다. 조건이 좋으면 봄에 부화해 그해 가을에 성숙하기도 한다(정, 1977; 김, 1997).
