병어 bookmark_add Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788)

농어목 병어과에 속하는 어류이다. 몸길이가 60cm, 높이가 45cm가량으로 모양은 납작한 마름모꼴로 주둥이는 짧고 끝이 둥글다. 배지느러미가 없고, 꼬리지느러미 후단은 깊게 파여 있다. 몸 전체가 금속성 광택을 띤 은백색이며, 아가미구멍이 작아서 눈의 하단부에 이르지 않는다. 잡히는 즉시 스트레스로 인해 죽기 때문에 살아 있는 개체를 보기는 어렵다. 대륙붕의 모래나 개펄 바닥의 저층부에 서식하며, 소형 갑각류, 갯지렁이류, 요각류 등을 먹고 산다. 산란은 5~8월에 한다. 우리나라 서해와 제주도를 포함한 남해에 출현하며, 일본 남부와 인도양에도 분포한다.
