붉은귀거북 bookmark_add Trachemys scripta (Schoepff, 1792)

거북목 늪거북과에 속하는 파충류이다. 수컷은 15cm가량이고, 암컷은 20cm 안팎이다. 등딱지는 완만하게 굽어 있다. 등딱지 빛깔은 진한 초록색 바탕에 노란색의 줄무늬가 있다. 눈의 바로 뒤쪽에 붉은색 띠가 있다. 아래턱은 둥글고, 뒷발가락은 막으로 연결되어 있다. 성숙한 수컷은 앞발톱이 자신의 뒷발톱이나 암컷의 발톱에 비해 2배 정도로 길게 자란다. 수컷은 꼬리에 위치한 항문이 등딱지의 끝을 벗어나 드러나 있으나, 암컷의 경우 벗어나지 못한다. 또 수컷의 꼬리는 굵고 길지만 암컷의 경우는 그렇지 않다. 물이 많고 비교적 흐름이 약한 호수나 큰 강, 작은 웅덩이에 살며 수생 동물로서 알을 낳을 때나 새로운 서식처를 찾아 나설 때가 아니면 물가를 떠나지 않는다. 어릴 때는 육식성이지만 나이를 먹으면서 초식성으로 변하고 어른이 되면 대부분 수생 식물만을 먹는다. 1년에 5~22개의 알을 낳는다. 성적으로 성숙하는 데에는 수컷은 1년, 암컷은 3년이 걸린다. 자연 상태에서 수명은 약 20년이다. 애완용으로 들여온 것이 전국에 서식하고 세계적으로는 미국에 분포한다.
