생이가래목 생이가래과에 속하는 한해살이 수생 양치식물이다. 호수, 저수지, 연못, 논 등 가두어진 물이 있는 곳에서 떠서 자란다. 식물체 전체 길이는 7~10cm이다. 줄기는 가늘게 수면 위로 뻗으며 자라고 털이 많고 가지가 많이 갈라진다. 한 마디에서 잎은 3장씩 돌려나지만 2장은 마주나서 물 위에 뜨고, 1장은 물속에서 뿌리 역할을 한다. 물 위에 뜬 잎은 가운데 잎줄의 양쪽에 깃처럼 배열되고 타원 모양으로 길이 1~1.5cm, 폭 6~10mm, 양 끝이 둔하다. 잎자루는 짧다. 잎의 양면은 원줄기와 더불어 잔털이 많고 옆 잎줄에 돌기가 있다. 물에 잠기는 잎은 수염뿌리 모양으로 가늘게 갈라진다. 물에 잠기는 잎은 가을철에는 밑부분에 주머니 같은 것이 생겨 안에 포자낭과가 형성된다. 포자는 크고 작은 것의 2가지 형태가 있다. 잎이 갈라지지 않고 물 위에 떠 있는 특징으로 네가래와 쉽게 구분된다. 관상용으로 심는다. 중금속에 오염된 물을 정화하는 데 쓸 수 있다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 거의 전 세계에 널리 분포한다.
