높은 산지의 바위틈에서 하록성 여러해살이풀로 지생하는 키 20~30cm의 양치식물로 전체에 샘털이 많이 난다. 뿌리줄기는 굵고 덩어리 모양이며, 비스듬히 서며, 잎은 모여 나오는데 마른 잎이 오래 붙어 있다. 잎자루는 길이 10cm로 샘털이 있고 비늘조각이 약간 밀생한다. 잎은 길이 25cm 내외로 2회 깃 모양으로 깊게 갈라지며 전체에 단세포성 샘털이 있다. 포자낭군은 가운데 잎줄 가까이에 1~3열로 배열하고, 포막은 둥근 콩팥 모양, 지름 2mm 정도이고 서로 겹쳐 난다. 가장자리와 표면에 샘털이 있다. 포자는 6~9월에 성숙한다. 우리나라 중부 이북, 일본, 중국 만주, 북아메리카 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 잎몸이 긴 타원상 피침형이며 2회 깃 모양으로 갈라지고 잎에 황색 샘털이 있으므로 속 내 유사종과 구별된다. 관상용으로 심는다.
