소나무목 소나무과에 속하는 상록성 겉씨식물이다. 비교적 높은 산지의 숲속과 능선부에서 자란다. 줄기는 높이 40m, 지름 1.5m에 달한다. 줄기껍질은 흑갈색이며 거칠고, 회백색의 얕은 홈이 있다. 잎은 선형으로 길이 4cm, 폭 2mm이며, 끝이 뾰족하다. 잎 뒷면 가운데 잎맥 양쪽에 하얀 기공선이 있다. 암수한그루이며 4~5월에 수분한다. 수구화수는 원통 모양으로 길이 15mm, 황록색이고, 2년지의 잎겨드랑이에 달린다. 암구화수는 2~3개가 가까이 달리며 긴 타원 모양으로 길이 3.5cm, 연한 녹색, 2년지에 곧추서서 달린다. 열매는 구과이며, 원통 모양으로 끝이 뾰족하거나 둔하고 길이 10~20cm, 폭 3.5cm이다. 10월에 익으며, 씨는 난상 삼각형으로 연한 갈색이고 날개가 있다. 목재는 건축재, 기구재, 선박재, 펄프재로 이용하며, 가로수 또는 산지 조림용으로 심는다. 일본에서 들여와 식재하고 있는 일본전나무와 비슷하나 소지에 털이 없고 어린잎이나 성숙한 잎이 모두 끝이 갈라지지 않고 하나인 점에서 구분할 수 있다. 젓나무라고도 한다. 우리나라 전역에 자생하며, 중국 동북부, 러시아 우수리 지역 등에 분포한다. 고위도 지역에서는 해발 10~1,200m, 저위도 지역에서는 해발 500~1,500m의 산지에서 자란다. 여름철에 강수량이 많고 겨울철에는 건조하나 눈이 오랫동안 쌓여 있는 산지의 경사면의 화강암이 풍화된 암설토에 자라며 북한 함경도 이북의 고위도 지역으로 갈수록 우점하기도 하나 잣나무와 함께 자란다. 저위도 지역에서는 신갈나무(<I>Quercus mongolica</I> Fisch. ex Ledeb.), 느릅나무(<I>Ulmus davidiana</I> Planch. var. <I>japonica</I> (Rehder) Nakai), 자작나무(<I>Betula platyphylla</I> var. <I>japonica</I> (Miq.) Hara)등의 낙엽활엽수와 혼재한 혼합수림을 이룬다(Farjon 1990). [2]
