분류체계
소나무목 소나무과에 속하는 상록성 겉씨식물이다. 산 중턱 사면 및 능선부에 나는 침엽 큰키나무로 높이 30m, 지름 60cm 정도로 자란다. 나무껍질은 짙은 회색 또는 암갈색이며 엷은 조각으로 벗겨지고, 어린가지에 처음에는 녹색이었다가 차츰 황갈색으로 변하며, 털이 있기도 하나 차츰 떨어진다. 잎은 단지에 5개가 모여나며 길이 3~8cm이고 뒷면에 2줄의 흰색 기공선이 있다. 암수한그루이며, 5~6월에 수분한다. 수구화수는 장타원형이고 새 가지 아래쪽에 모여 달린다. 암구화수는 타원형으로 홍자색 또는 녹색이며, 새가지 끝에 2~3개씩 달린다. 열매는 구과, 긴 난형으로 길이 4~7cm, 지름 4~5cm이다. 이듬해 9~10월에 익고, 씨는 타원형, 길이 1cm 정도이며, 윗부분에 짧은 날개가 있다. 조경수, 분재용으로 심는다. 목재는 가구재, 건축재, 도구재로 이용한다. 우리나라 경상북도 울릉도에 자생하며 일본에도 분포한다.
