Retinospora obtuse Siebold & Zucc.
일본 원산이며 조림용으로 산지에 식재하는 상록성 큰키나무이다. 줄기는 높이 30~40m, 지름 60cm까지 자라며, 가지가 갈라지고 수평으로 퍼진다. 나무껍질은 흑갈색 또는 적갈색이고, 세로로 벗겨진다. 어린가지는 편평하며, 밑으로 처진다. 잎은 난상 능형, 끝은 둥글다. 잎 뒷면에 Y자 모양의 흰색 기공선이 있다. 암수한그루이며 구화수는 4월에 가지 끝에 달린다. 수구화수는 자갈색, 타원형으로 길이 3mm쯤이다. 암구화수는 붉은 갈색, 둥글며 지름 1cm쯤이다. 열매는 구과, 난형이고, 어린가지 끝에 붙으며, 10~11월에 광택이 있는 적갈색으로 익는다. 실편은 8~10개, 씨는 납작한 원형이며, 실편에 2개씩 붙고, 가장자리에 넓은 날개가 있다. 우리나라 중부 이남, 주로 남부지역과 제주도에서 식재하며, 일본 혼슈 이남에 분포한다. 화백에 비해 잎이 줄기에 붙으며, 끝이 둥글어 구분된다. 측백나무에 비해 잎 뒷면에 Y자 모양의 기공선이 있으므로 구분된다. 관상용으로 심으며, 목재는 건축재, 교량재, 가구재 등으로 쓴다. 편백나무라고도 한다.
