분류체계
산지의 경사 지대 양지바른 곳에 자라는 상록 작은큰키나무로 높이 5m에 이른다. 줄기껍질은 회백색으로 밋밋하다. 잔털이 많으며 겨울에도 마른 잎이 잘 떨어지지 않는다. 잎은 어긋나며 부드러운 가죽질이고, 타원형으로 길이 5~10cm다. 잎몸은 양 끝이 뾰족하고, 가장자리는 밋밋한 물결 모양이다. 잎 앞면은 녹색으로 광택이 있고, 뒷면은 회녹색이다. 어린잎은 털이 있으나 점차 없어진다. 꽃은 4~5월에 암수딴그루로 피며 노란색이고, 잎겨드랑이에서 나오는 산형꽃차례에 달린다. 화피조각은 6장, 수술은 9개다. 열매는 장과, 둥근 모양으로 검게 익는다. 우리나라 전라남도, 경상남도, 제주도, 황해남도 등에 나며, 중국, 타이완, 일본 등에 분포한다. 비목나무와 비슷하나, 감태나무는 작은큰키나무이고, 열매가 검은색으로 익는 점으로 뚜렷이 구분된다. 구황식물로 잎을 먹을 수 있고, 열매와 뿌리는 약으로 쓴다.
