녹나무목 녹나무과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 양지바른 산기슭 경사 지대에서 높이 3~5m 정도로 자라는 낙엽 활엽 떨기나무이다. 잎은 어긋나며, 심장형 또는 난형으로 길이 5~15cm, 폭 4~13cm이고, 가장자리는 밋밋하거나 3~5갈래로 크게 갈라진다. 잎자루는 길이 1~2cm다. 꽃은 3~4월에 잎보다 먼저 암수딴그루로 피며, 꽃대가 없는 산형꽃차례에 달리고 노란색이다. 화피는 6장이다. 수꽃에는 수술 6개, 암꽃에는 암술 1개와 헛수술 9개가 있다. 열매는 장과이며, 9~10월에 검게 익는다. 이 종은 꽃자루가 짧고 털이 밀생하며, 수술이 짧아 꽃 밖으로 나오지 않으므로 산수유와 다르다. 어린가지는 약용하며, 종자에서 기름을 얻어 머릿기름으로 쓴다. 동박나무, 동백나무라고도 한다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국 중부 이북, 일본 혼슈 중부 이남, 네팔, 부탄, 인도 등에 분포한다.
