Chloranthus japonicus var. manshuricus Makino
산지 숲속에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 높이 20~40cm, 마디가 3~4개 있고, 윤이 나며 보라색을 띤다. 잎은 줄기 끝에 4장이 모여나며, 난형 또는 타원형, 길이 4~12cm, 폭 5~6cm, 가장자리에 날카로운 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 4~5월에 줄기 끝의 이삭꽃차례에 피며, 흰색이다. 꽃차례는 길이 3cm쯤이다. 꽃받침잎과 꽃잎은 없다. 수술은 3개, 흰색 실 같으며, 길이 4~5mm, 밑부분이 합쳐져서 씨방의 등 쪽에 붙고, 바깥쪽 2개의 수술대 밑부분에 꽃밥이 달린다. 열매는 삭과, 둥글다. 우리나라 전역에 자생하며, 러시아, 일본, 중국 동부 등에 분포한다. 남부지방과 제주도에 분포하는 옥녀꽃대에 비해서 양쪽 2개의 수술 밑에만 1실로 된 꽃밥이 달리며, 수술대가 짧으므로 구분된다. 열매는 9~10월에 여문다. 호래비꽃대, 홀애비꽃대라고도 한다.
