해안 산기슭 양지에 자라는 상록성 활엽 덩굴성식물이다. 줄기는 길이 3m, 지름 1.5cm에 이른다. 오래된 줄기는 갈색으로 코르크층이 발달하기도 하며 굵은 것은 2cm에 이른다. 또한 줄기가 세로로 갈라져 나무껍질이 벗겨지는 특징이 있다. 잎은 어긋나고 가죽질이며 윤택이 있다. 잎 모양은 광난형 또는 긴 타원상 피침형이고 잎끝이 점차 뾰족해지고 밑이 뾰족하며 이 모양의 작은 톱니가 드문드문 있다. 잎 양면에 털이 없고 뒷면은 유점(油點)이 있으며 자주색을 띠는 것이 많다. 꽃은 양성화이며 4~8월에 잎겨드랑이에 달리고 연한 황백색으로 핀다. 꽃자루는 잎자루보다 길며 꽃받침잎은 2~4개이고 꽃잎은 6~8개이며 암술과 수술이 많다. 열매는 붉은색 장과이고 둥글며, 9~10월에 익는다. 우리나라 전라남도 도서지방, 제주도 등에 나며 일본, 대만, 중국 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 상록성이며, 구형의 열매가 모여 달리므로 유사종과 구별된다. 열매는 오미자 대용으로 약용하며, 껍질은 제지용 접착제로, 껍질 삶은 물은 머리감는 데 사용한다.
