분류체계
수련목 붕어마름과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 강, 습지, 연못 등의 물속에서 여러해살이풀로 자라는 침수성 수생식물이다. 줄기는 가늘고 길며, 물속에 잠기고 가지를 치며, 길이는 30~60(~80)cm이다. 잎은 녹색 또는 연두색으로 2~3회 갈라지며, 8~9개의 갈래조각이 돌려난다. 갈래조각의 가장자리에 불규칙한 톱니가 있으며, 톱니 끝에 투명한 가시가 있다. 꽃은 5~6월에 암수한그루에 피며, 막질의 모인꽃싸개잎에 싸여 잎겨드랑이에 달린다. 수꽃의 모인꽃싸개잎 자루는 길이 1mm 정도, 꽃잎은 없으며, 수술은 여러 개이고 수술대는 없다. 암꽃의 모인꽃싸개잎 자루는 길이 2~8mm, 모인꽃싸개잎은 길이 2~7mm이다. 열매는 수과, 길이 4.5mm, 7~8월에 익으며, 아래에 가시가 2개 있다. 이 종과 비교하여 열매 윗부분에 아랫부분의 가시와 90° 방향으로 2개의 가시가 마주나는 것을 다섯가시붕어마름이라 하여 구분한다. 관상용으로 식재하고, 오리, 닭 등의 가축먹이로도 이용한다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 러시아, 일본, 중국 등에 분포한다.
