높은 산의 고지대에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추서며 윗부분에서 가지를 치고, 높이 20~35(~60)cm, 전체에 누운털이 있다. 뿌리잎은 모여나고 잎자루가 길며, 양면에 흰 털이 있다. 줄기에 달리는 잎은 2~5장이고, 보통 3~5갈래로 갈라지며, 갈래조각은 좁은 선형으로 끝이 뾰족하다. 꽃은 6~8월에 피는데 가지 끝에서 취산꽃차례로 달리며, 노란색이다. 꽃받침잎은 5장으로 타원형 또는 넓은 타원형으로 뒷면에 털이 있다. 꽃잎은 5장으로 넓은 도란형이다. 열매는 수과, 난형이다. 한반도 북부지방에 나며, 러시아, 중국 등에 분포한다. 한국산 미나리아재비속 식물 중에서, 미나리아재비, 바위미나리아재비, 산미나리아재비와 만주미나리아재비는 외부형태가 서로 유사한데, 이들은 공통적으로 줄기에 많은 털이 퍼져 있거나 누워 있으며, 꽃은 원추꽃차례를 이루고, 꽃의 지름은 2cm 내외로 크다. 산미나리아재비는 털이 위로 비스듬히 누운 반면에 미나리아재비는 털이 줄기에 수직으로 퍼져나가는 것이 다르다.
