햇빛이 잘 들고 습기가 많은 들판에서 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 뿌리줄기는 짧다. 줄기는 곧추서고 속이 비어 있으며, 높이 40~80cm, 가지를 치며 전체에 거칠고 퍼진 털이 많다. 뿌리잎은 잎자루가 길며, 잎몸은 3갈래로 갈라진 겹잎이고, 갈래잎은 다시 2~3갈래로 갈라진다. 잎자루에 거센털이 옆으로 퍼져 나 있다. 줄기잎은 위로 갈수록 작아진다. 꽃은 5~6월에 피는데 줄기와 가지 끝에서 취산꽃차례에 달리며, 노란색이다. 작은꽃자루에 누운털이 있다. 꽃받침잎과 꽃잎은 각각 5장이다. 열매는 수과, 타원형이며, 다수가 집합하여 달리고 6~7월에 익는다. 우리나라 전역에 자생하며, 세계적으로 러시아 아무르, 우수리, 몽골, 일본, 중국 만주, 중앙아시아 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 열매가 꽃이 진 후, 꽃턱이 신장하여 길이 1cm 이상의 원통형인 점에서 털개구리미나리를 비롯한 구형인 열매를 갖는 종과 구별된다. 전초를 약용한다. 젓가락풀이라고도 부른다.
