분류체계
양귀비목 양귀비과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 공원이나 하천 변에서 귀화하여 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 줄기는 높이 30~80cm, 전체에 털이 있다. 잎은 어긋나며 깃꼴로 갈라지고, 갈래잎은 피침형으로 가장자리에 결각상 톱니가 있고 양면에 털이 있다. 아래쪽 잎은 잎자루가 있고, 위쪽 잎은 잎자루가 없다. 꽃은 5~6월에 붉은색 또는 분홍색으로 피며, 줄기 끝에 1개씩 달리고 지름 5~8cm다. 꽃받침잎은 2장, 녹색, 겉에 털이 있으며, 꽃이 피면 바로 떨어진다. 꽃잎은 4장, 길이 2~5cm다. 수술은 여러 개가 있고, 꽃밥은 자주색이다. 열매는 삭과, 넓은 도란형, 길이 1~2cm, 털이 없다. 씨는 그물 모양 무늬가 있다. 이 종에 비해 양귀비는 전체에 털이 없고, 잎은 깊이 갈라지지 않으며 밑부분이 줄기를 감싸므로 구분된다. 관상용으로 심어 기르던 것이 야생으로 퍼져 자라고 있다. 유럽 원산으로 우리나라 전역과 북아메리카에 귀화하여 나며, 유럽, 아시아 등에 분포한다.
