양귀비목 현호색과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 햇빛이 잘 비치는 산속 집터, 절터, 돌이 많은 곳 등에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 높이 50~70cm, 가지가 갈라지기도 한다. 잎은 어긋나며, 2~3번 깃꼴로 갈라지는 겹잎이다. 꽃은 5~6월에 옆 또는 아래로 늘어져 활처럼 휜 길이 20~30cm의 총상꽃차례에 밑으로 주렁주렁 달리며, 연한 붉은색, 심장 모양이다. 꽃잎은 4장, 바깥쪽 2장은 끝이 구부러져 밖으로 젖혀지고, 안쪽 2장은 합쳐져서 돌기처럼 된다. 수술은 6개, 암술은 1개다. 열매는 긴 타원형의 삭과다. 이 종은 꽃이 총상꽃차례에 연한 홍색으로 주렁주렁 피고, 양쪽으로 납작한 난상 원형이므로 현호색류와 구별된다. 꽃이 아름다워 관상용으로 심으며, 전초는 약용한다. 며느리주머니, 등모란이라고도 한다. 우리나라 제주도를 제외한 전역에 나며, 세계적으로 중국 동북 지방에 분포한다. 과거에 관상 또는 약용식물로 중국에서 들여와 심은 것으로 알려져 있지만 적어도 남부 이북의 고도가 높고, 인위적인 간섭이 적은 거의 모든 산지 숲속과 계곡 주변에 분포하는 것으로 보아 이들은 원래 국내에 자생했을 가능성도 배제할 수 없다.
