양버즘나무 bookmark_add Platanus occidentalis L.

북아메리카 원산이며 공원이나 도로변에 가로수나 녹음수로 식재하는 낙엽 활엽 큰키나무로 높이 50m, 지름 1m가량 자란다. 나무껍질은 어두운 갈색으로 세로로 갈라지면서 작은 조각으로 떨어져 얼룩덜룩한 반점처럼 보인다. 잎은 마주나며 넓은 난형으로 3~5개로 얕게 갈라지고, 폭 10~20cm, 가장자리는 밋밋하거나 드문드문 톱니가 있다. 어린잎은 양면에 털이 많으나 점차 떨어지고 뒷면 맥 위에만 짧은 털이 남아 있다. 꽃은 4~5월에 암수한그루에 피는데 공 모양의 머리모양꽃차례를 이룬다. 수꽃은 가지 옆에 달리고, 암꽃은 연한 녹색으로 가지 끝에 달린다. 열매는 수과가 여러 개 모여 지름 3cm 정도의 공 모양을 이루어 1~2개씩 달리며, 9~10월에 익는다. 우리나라 전역, 전 세계에서 식재한다. 이 종은 공 모양의 열매가 가지 끝에서 1~2개 달리고 잎 중앙열편의 세로가 가로보다 길며 턱잎 길이가 보다 긴 특징으로서 열매가 3~5개 달리고 잎 중앙열편의 세로가 가로보다 짧으며 턱잎 길이가 1cm 미만인 버즘나무와 구분된다. 원산지에서는 약재로 쓴다. 플라타너스라고도 한다.
