산기슭이나 강가에 자라는 큰키나무로 높이 20m, 지름 1~2m 정도이다. 나무껍질은 회갈색, 세로로 갈라진다. 잎은 어긋나며, 난형 또는 타원형, 길이 5~13cm, 폭 2.5~6.5cm, 끝은 뾰족하고, 밑은 쐐기 모양, 가장자리에 날카로운 톱니가 있다. 잎의 밑부분에서 3개의 큰 맥이 나오고 거기에서 7~12쌍의 측맥이 나와 가장자리의 톱니에 닿는다. 잎자루는 길이 5~10mm이다. 꽃은 5월에 암수한그루에 핀다. 수꽃이삭은 햇가지의 잎겨드랑이에서 나온 취산꽃차례에 달린다. 화피는 5장, 수술은 5개이다. 암꽃은 잎겨드랑이에서 1~2개씩 달리며, 암술대는 2갈래로 갈라진다. 열매는 핵과, 둥글며, 지름 12~13mm, 10월에 검게 익는다. 우리나라 전라남도, 경상남도, 경북 울릉도, 서·남해안 섬 지역, 제주도 등에 자생하며, 타이완, 일본, 중국 중남부 등에 분포한다. 팽나무속에 비해 측맥의 끝이 톱니의 끝까지 닿으므로 구분된다. 열매는 식용하고, 목재는 건축재, 기구재, 악기재로 쓴다. 곰병나무라고도 부른다.
