Celtis japonica Planch.
쐐기풀목 팽나무과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 산지의 경사 지대, 계곡, 길가 등에서 자라는 낙엽 활엽 큰키나무이다. 줄기는 높이 20m, 지름 2m에 달하며 줄기껍질은 회색 또는 회흑색이다. 어린 가지에 털이 많다. 잎은 달걀 모양 또는 넓은 타원형이며, 끝이 뾰족하고 윗부분에 잔 톱니가 있다. 옆줄은 3~4쌍이다. 잎자루는 길이 1~12mm이고 털이 있다. 꽃은 수꽃양성화한그루로 4~5월에 피는데 수꽃은 새 가지의 밑부분 잎겨드랑이에 취산꽃차례로 달리며, 수술이 4개다. 양성꽃은 새 가지 윗부분에 1~3개씩 달리며, 화피 4장, 수술 4개, 암술 1개, 암술대는 2개로 갈라져 뒤로 젖혀진다. 열매는 구형의 핵과이며, 10월에 등황색으로 익는다. 잎의 끝이 3~5개의 얕은 열편으로 갈라지는 산팽나무와 달리 팽나무는 잎의 끝이 갈라지지 않고, 긴 꼬리도 없으므로 구별된다. 공원수, 정원수, 풍치수로 심는다. 목재를 기구재, 숯으로 이용하고, 나무껍질을 약용한다. 우리나라 전역에서 자라며, 중국, 일본 등에 분포한다. 낙엽활엽수로 꽃은 4~5월에 피고 열매는 10월에 익는다. 햇볕이 잘 드는 곳에 잘 자라며 그늘에서는 자라지 못한다. 배수가 잘되는 토양에서 잘 자라며 건조하거나 습한 곳 어디에서나 잘 자라며 가뭄에도 강하다. [2]
