산기슭이나 개울가에서 높이 20m, 지름 2m 정도로 자라는 낙엽 활엽 큰키나무이다. 나무껍질은 깊게 갈라지고, 가시 같은 짧은가지가 있다. 잎은 어긋나며, 긴 타원형으로 길이 3~6cm, 폭 1.7~2.6cm, 끝은 둔하게 뾰족하고, 밑은 얕은 신장형이며, 가장자리에 고른 톱니가 있다. 잎자루는 길이 2~4mm, 잔털이 있다. 측맥은 8~15쌍이 있다. 턱잎은 긴 타원형으로 일찍 떨어진다. 꽃은 4~5월에 어린가지의 잎겨드랑이에 1~4개씩 핀다. 꽃자루는 길이 1~4mm로 털이 없다. 화피는 길이 1~2mm, 4~5갈래로 갈라진다. 열매는 시과, 길이 5~6mm, 한쪽에만 날개가 발달하며, 6월에 익어 8~9월까지 붙어 있다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국에 분포한다. 느릅나무속에 비해 가지에 가시가 발달하고, 열매는 비대칭으로 한쪽에만 날개가 있으므로 구별된다. 어린잎은 식용한다. 울타리용으로 식재하고, 목재는 기구재로 이용한다.
