Fortunaea chinensis Lindl.

숲의 가장자리에서 높이 5~15m 정도로 자라는 낙엽 큰키나무이다. 줄기 껍질은 회색이고 세로로 갈라진다. 잎은 작은잎 7~19장으로 이루어진 홀수깃꼴겹잎이며, 길이 15~30cm이다. 작은잎은 넓은 피침형, 길이 5~10cm, 폭 2~4cm, 가장자리에 톱니가 있고, 끝이 뾰족하며, 잎자루가 거의 없다. 꽃은 6월에 암수한그루에 핀다. 수꽃이삭은 길이 5~8cm로서 위를 향해 서며, 암꽃이삭은 길이 3~5cm의 긴 타원형이고 암꽃에는 화피가 없다. 열매는 여러 개가 긴 타원형을 이루어 모여 달리며, 견과이고, 가장자리에 날개가 있다. 우리나라 중부 이남에 자라지만 남부 및 도서지역으로 내려갈수록 흔하게 나며, 세계적으로 중국, 베트남, 일본 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 수꽃 꽃차례가 직립하는 특징에서 호두나 중국굴피나무와 뚜렷이 구분된다. 가로수, 조경수로 심으며, 목재는 가구재로 쓰고, 나무껍질은 염료로 이용한다. 열매와 뿌리는 약용한다.
