참나무목 참나무과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 해발고도 100~1,800m의 산 중턱에서 자라는 낙엽 활엽 큰키나무로, 줄기는 곧추서서 30m까지 자라나, 밑에서부터 여러 개의 줄기가 한꺼번에 자라기도 한다. 잎은 서로 엇갈려 달리며, 길이 7~20cm, 폭 6~12cm의 도란형으로 끝은 다소 둥글고, 잎자루가 2~5mm 정도로 짧아 잎 아래쪽이 줄기를 감싸는 것처럼 보인다. 잎 앞뒷면에 털이 없다. 물결 모양의 톱니가 3~17쌍 정도 잎 가장자리에 달린다. 꽃은 암꽃과 수꽃이 한 개체에서 4~5월에 서로 다른 꽃차례에 무리 지어 피는데, 수꽃 꽃차례는 길게 늘어지고, 암꽃 꽃차례는 곧추선다. 열매는 도토리로 길이 6~25mm, 너비 6~21mm 정도의 타원형인데, 도토리집에 1/2~1/3가량 들어가 있다. 9~10월에 결실한다. 우리나라에 자라는 낙엽성 참나무 종류의 대표적인 종으로, 잎이 도란형이며, 잎 가장자리에 있는 톱니는 물결 모양, 잎자루는 매우 짧으며, 잎 앞뒷면에 털이 없어 구분된다. 갈참나무와 비슷하나, 잎자루가 짧고, 잎 뒷면이 하얀색이 아니며, 잎 아래쪽이 줄기를 감싸는 것처럼 되어 구분된다. 목재는 기구재, 건축재, 펄프, 숯, 표고버섯 원목으로 이용하며, 열매는 식용한다. 물갈나무, 돌참나무, 재라리나무, 털깃옷신갈이라고도 한다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국과 러시아 극동 지방 등에 분포한다.     고사십이집 인광노(引光奴: 성냥개비) - 소나무를 쪼개어 작은 조각을 만들되 종이처럼 얇게 하고 유황(疏黃)을 녹여 그 끝에 발라두었다가 혹 밤에 급한 일이 생길 적에 그 끝에 화로의 숯불을 옮겨 붙이면 즉시 불이 붙는다. 이 방법은 송나라 초기에 항주(抗州) 사람에게서 나왔는데, 이름이 발촉(發燭)이다. 또 이름을 쉬아(碎兒)라고도 하였는데 송나라 한림학사 도곡(陶穀)이 인광노라고 개명하였다. 우리나라는 근래 혹 화피(澤皮: 자작나무 껍질) 방법으로 만들어 저자에서 팔았는데 이는 항주의 풍속과 같다. 그러나 화피는 불을 붙이면 너무 급히 타서 불을 옮겨 붙이기도 전에 다 타버려 불이 꺼지는 일이 있으므로 소나무조각으로 붙이는 것보다 오래가지 못한다. 불을 붙이는 법은 세 가지가 있다. 첫째는 찬수(鐵機: 나무를 비벼 불을 붙이는 법)로, 봄에는 느릅나무 · 버드나무, 여름에는 대추나무 살구나무, 늦여름에는 뽕나무· 산뽕나무, 가을에는 떡갈나무· 졸참나무, 겨울에는 홰나무 박달나무에 구멍을 뚫고 문질러 불을 내는 것이 이것이다. 둘째는 양수(陽繼: 화경<火鏡〉으로 불을 붙이는 법)로, 수정 구슬을 해를 향하게 하고 쑥을 그 중심에 놓고 빛이 모이는 곳에서 불을 취하는 것이 이것이다. 셋째는 빙대(泳臺: 쑥에 불을 붙이는 법)로, 얼음을 깎아 둥글게 만들고는 해를 향해 들고서 쑥을 놓고 빛을 받는 것을 양수(陽繼)의 방법대로 하면 저절로 불이 붙는다. 그러므로 쑥을 또한 빙대라고 하는 것이 이 때문이다. 그러나 이는 모두 신화(新火: 새로 붙인 불)이니, 신화이면서도 인광(引光)은 구화(舊火: 원래 있던 불)로부터 피우는 것이다. 생활용 비공개
