Alnus firma var. hirtella Franch. & Sav. (왕사방오리)
일본 원산으로 사방조림용으로 식재하는 낙엽 활엽 큰키나무이다. 줄기는 높이 8~15m가량 자란다. 나무껍질은 회갈색이며 어린 가지에는 털이 없다. 겨울눈은 가늘고 길며 비늘조각은 3~4개이다. 잎은 난상 피침형 또는 긴 타원상 피침형이며 길이는 5~12cm이다. 잎끝이 점차 뾰족해지고 가장자리에 불규칙한 잔 겹톱니가 있다. 털은 있으나 점차 없어지며 뒷면 맥 위에만 남는다. 꽃은 3~4월에 피며, 암수한그루이다. 수꽃이삭은 가지 끝에 3~6개씩 나서 밑으로 처진다. 암꽃이삭은 수꽃이삭 밑에 있는 짧은 가지 끝에 1~2개씩 달린다. 열매는 소견과로 타원형이며 길이 2~2.5cm이고 양쪽에 날개가 있으며 10월에 익는다. 전국 각지에 식재한다. 오리나무에 비해 잎의 측맥 수가 많으므로 구별된다. 사방조림용으로 심으며, 열매와 나무껍질에서 염료를 얻는다. 뿌리를 약용한다.
