[국명이명]
여자화

석죽목 분꽃과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 화단이나 정원에 관상용으로 식재하는 한해 또는 여러해살이풀이다. 뿌리는 굵다. 줄기는 가지가 많이 갈라지며 마디가 굵고 높이 60~100cm이다. 잎자루는 길이 1~2cm이다. 잎은 마주나며 난형 또는 넓은 난형이고 길이 4~10cm, 폭 2~6cm, 가장자리가 밋밋하고 끝이 뾰족하다. 꽃은 가지 끝의 취산꽃차례에 피며 향기가 나고 붉은색, 흰색 또는 노란색이다. 꽃싸개잎은 꽃받침처럼 보이며 녹색이고 5갈래로 갈라진다. 꽃받침은 꽃잎처럼 보이며 깔때기 모양이다. 꽃잎은 없다. 수술은 5개이고 밖으로 나온다. 암술대는 밖으로 길게 나온다. 열매는 난형이고 겉에 주름이 있으며 검게 익는다. 자가교배 및 타가교배를 통해 분홍색, 보라색, 자주색, 크림색 등 다양한 꽃 색과 무늬가 나타나는 여러 가지 품종이 있다. 꽃은 식용색소 원료다. 잎을 염증약으로 쓴다. 남아메리카 페루 원산이며 우리나라 각지에서 심어 기른다.
