좀능쟁이

길가, 밭, 빈터 등에 나는 한해살이풀로 높이는 30~50cm이다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 가지를 많이 친다. 잎은 어긋나며, 장타원형으로 길이 3~7cm, 폭 2~5cm, 끝은 둔하고 가장자리에 불규칙한 톱니가 있으며, 뒷면은 분백색을 띤다. 꽃은 7월에 양성꽃으로 피는데 가지 끝에 빽빽하게 모여 원추꽃차례를 이루며, 녹색이다. 꽃받침은 5개로 도란형이고 수술은 5개이다. 열매는 포과로 9월에 익는데 뒷면에 능선이 있고 화피에 싸여 있다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 러시아 시베리아, 일본, 중국, 유럽, 중앙아시아 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 명아주속 다른 식물에 비해 잎은 3갈래로 갈라지고 화피는 열매를 감싸며, 종자는 광택이 없으므로 구분된다. 또한 잎몸은 대개 삼각상 장타원형 또는 좁은 난형으로 가장자리에 결각이 깊은 물결 모양의 톱니가 있는 점에서 잎몸이 보다 넓은 마름모형 또는 삼각상 난형으로 가장자리에 불규칙한 톱니가 있는 흰명아주와 구별된다. 전초는 약용하며, 어린잎은 식용한다. 좀능쟁이라고도 부른다.
