Salicornia europaea var. herbacea L.
석죽목 명아주과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 바닷가 갯벌에서 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 전체가 다육질이고, 녹색이지만 가을에 붉은색으로 변한다. 줄기는 곧추서며 마디마다 양쪽으로 퉁퉁한 가지가 갈라지고 높이 10~30cm이다. 잎은 마디의 윗부분에 마주나며 비늘조각 모양이다. 꽃은 7~9월에 피는데 가지 윗부분 마디의 양쪽 비늘잎겨드랑이 홈 속에 3개씩 달려 전체적으로 이삭꽃차례를 이루며 녹색이다. 3개의 꽃 중 가운데 것은 양쪽의 것보다 크다. 화피는 주머니 모양이고 다육질이며 꽃이 핀 후 가장자리가 자라서 날개처럼 되어 열매를 감싼다. 수술은 2개이며 화피 밖으로 나온다. 암술대는 1개이며 짧다. 열매는 포과이며 납작한 난형이다. 국내에 분포하는 명아주과 식물과 비교하여 잎은 거의 없고, 마디가 불룩하게 튀어나오므로 구분된다. 식용, 약용한다. 우리나라 서해안, 경상북도 울릉도 등에 자생하며, 러시아, 인도, 일본, 중국, 남아프리카, 유럽, 북미 등에 분포한다.
