분류체계
밭, 길가, 빈터, 민가 근처에 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 줄기는 밑부분에서 가지가 많이 갈라지며, 높이 30~80cm, 전체에 털이 없다. 잎은 어긋나며, 삼각상 난형으로 길이 4~8cm, 폭 2~6cm, 끝은 오목하게 들어가고 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 잎자루는 길이 1~6cm다. 꽃은 7~8월에 피는데 잎겨드랑이에서 덩어리로 뭉쳐 달리고, 줄기 끝에서 길이 2~8cm의 이삭꽃차례를 이룬다. 꽃싸개잎은 난형, 길이 0.7mm다. 화피편은 3장, 좁은 피침형, 길이 1.5mm쯤이다. 수술은 3개, 암술은 1개다. 열매는 포과, 난형, 화피보다 다소 길고 약간의 주름이 있다. 유럽 원산으로 알려져 있으며, 우리나라 전역뿐 아니라 전 세계에 귀화하여 분포한다. 청비름에 비해서 꽃차례가 길고 엉성하게 달리며 잎은 삼각상 난형이고, 눈비름에 비해 줄기는 곧게 자라며, 잎이 보다 넓으므로 구분된다. 어린순과 잎을 나물로 먹는다.
