천일초
석죽목 비름과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 관상용으로 햇볕이 잘 드는 화단, 정원 등에 널리 심어 기르는 한해살이풀로 키는 40cm가량, 전체에 털이 있다. 기본 줄기는 곧게 선다. 잎은 마주나며, 도란상 긴 타원형, 길이 3~10cm, 가장자리는 밋밋하고, 잎자루가 있다. 머리모양꽃차례인 머리모양꽃은 7~10월에 피는데 가지 끝에 1개씩 달리고, 꽃 아래에 있는 잎 모양의 꽃싸개잎은 2개, 난상 원형이다. 꽃은 진한 붉은색, 연한 붉은색, 흰색이고 화피는 5장, 선상 피침형, 끝이 뾰족하고, 꽃싸개잎보다 짧으며, 털이 있다. 수술은 5개, 밑에서 합쳐져 통 모양이며, 암술대는 2개이다. 열매는 수과, 8~11월에 익으며 씨가 1개씩 들어 있다. 뜨거운 열이나 햇볕에 강하며, 가뭄에도 강한 특성을 지니고 있다. 관상용으로 재배한다. 열대 원산으로 우리나라 각지에서 식재한다.
