양지바른 들판, 길가, 경작지 주변 등에서 자라는 한해 또는 두해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추서거나 비스듬히 자라며, 높이 8~15cm, 밑에서 가지를 치고 전체에 짧은 털이 있다. 잎은 마주나며, 잎자루는 없다. 잎몸은 난형 또는 넓은 타원형으로 길이 3~5mm, 폭 1~3mm, 양쪽 끝은 뾰족하고 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 꽃은 4~5월에 피는데 흰색이고, 윗부분 잎겨드랑이에 취산꽃차례로 달린다. 꽃받침잎은 5개, 난형 또는 넓은 피침형으로 길이 3~5mm, 끝은 뾰족하다. 꽃잎은 5개, 도란형, 끝은 둔하다. 수술은 10개, 암술은 3개다. 열매는 삭과, 난형, 5~6월에 익으며, 끝은 6개로 갈라진다. 씨는 납작한 타원형으로 길이 0.3~0.5mm, 겉에 작은 돌기가 있다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 러시아, 일본, 중국, 호주; 북아메리카, 북아프리카, 유럽 등에 분포한다. 북부지방에 자생하는 벼룩이울타리에 비해 한해 또는 두해살이풀로 줄기는 밑에서 비교적 덜 분지하고 잎은 난형, 꽃받침보다 꽃잎이 짧아 구분된다. 어린순을 식용한다. 모래별꽃, 좁쌀뱅이라고도 부른다.
