Lychnis fulgens var. typica Regel.
산지의 숲 가장자리나 초지의 습기가 있는 곳에서 드물게 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 전체에 길고 연한 흰 털이 있다. 줄기는 곧추서며 높이 30~100cm다. 잎은 마주나며 긴 난형으로 길이 4~7cm, 폭 1.5~4.0cm이고 잎자루가 없다. 꽃은 6~8월에 피는데 줄기 끝과 윗부분의 잎겨드랑이에 취산꽃차례를 이루어 달리며 주홍색이다. 꽃부리는 지름 4cm쯤이다. 꽃자루는 매우 짧다. 꽃받침은 통 모양으로 막질이며 길이 1.5~2.0cm이고 끝이 5갈래로 갈라진다. 꽃잎은 5장으로 납작하게 벌어지고 끝이 깊게 2갈래로 갈라지며 가장자리에 얕은 톱니가 있다. 수술은 10개, 암술대는 5개다. 열매는 둥근 타원형의 삭과, 8~9월에 익는다. 씨는 검은색에 가깝고 작으며 겉에 뾰족한 돌기가 있다. 한반도 강원도, 함경북도, 함경남도, 평안북도, 황해북도 등에 자생하며, 중국, 일본, 러시아 동북부 등에 분포한다. 동자꽃은 꽃싸개잎과 꽃받침에 털이 비교적 적으며 꽃잎이 얕게 갈라지며 색깔이 주황색을 띠는 특징에 비해 털동자꽃은 꽃싸개잎과 꽃받침에 털이 빽빽이 나 있고, 꽃잎이 깊게 갈리며 진한 빨간색을 띠는 특징으로 두 분류군을 구별할 수 있다. 관상용으로 심는다.
