습기가 있는 밭이나 들에서 자라는 두해 또는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 밑에서 가지가 갈라지며, 길이 20~80cm이고, 밑부분은 연약하여 옆으로 눕는다. 잎은 마주나며, 난형으로 길이 2~6cm, 폭 0.5~3.0cm다. 꽃은 4~5월에 가지 끝 취산꽃차례에 피며, 흰색이다. 꽃자루는 길이 1~2cm, 털이 많이 나며, 꽃이 진 후 밑으로 굽는다. 꽃받침조각은 5장, 가장자리는 막질, 뒷면에 털이 많다. 꽃잎은 5장, 깊게 2갈래로 갈라지며, 길이 3~4mm다. 수술은 10개, 꽃잎보다 짧다. 암술대는 5개이고, 꽃받침잎과 어긋나게 붙는다. 열매는 삭과, 5~8월에 익는데 난형이고, 5갈래로 갈라진다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 북반구 난대에서 온대, 북아프리카 등에 분포한다. 별꽃속에 비해 암술대가 5갈래이고 열매는 난형이므로 구분된다. 어린순은 식용 및 약용한다. 콩버무리라고도 부른다.
