높은 산의 양지에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 키가 10~30cm가량이다. 뿌리줄기는 굵고 짧다. 뿌리잎은 피침형 또는 긴 타원상 피침형, 가장자리는 밋밋하며, 뒷면은 흰색을 띠고, 잎자루가 길다. 꽃이삭은 길이 2~5cm, 원기둥 모양이며, 하부에 살눈이 달린다. 꽃은 7~8월에 피는데 흰색 또는 연분홍색이고, 화피는 5장, 수술 6개, 암술대는 3개이며, 길게 꽃 밖으로 나오고 결실하지 않는다. 한반도 북부지방 양강도, 함경도 등에 자생하며, 아시아, 유럽, 북아메리카 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 한반도 북부 고산 지대에 자라는 식물로 꽃차례의 아랫부분에 무성생식을 할 수 있는 살눈이 달리는 특징으로 범꼬리 종류의 다른 분류군과 뚜렷이 구분된다. 뿌리줄기를 약용하며, 가죽 가공 약품, 물감원료로 이용한다. 갈범의꼬리, 무강범의꼬리, 산범의꼬리, 씨범꼬리풀이라고도 부른다.
