분류체계
건조한 산지에 자라거나 심어 기르는 여러해살이풀이다. 뿌리는 굵고 나무질로 된다. 줄기는 곧게 자라며, 높이 0.6~1.5m, 세로줄이 있고 속은 비어 있다. 뿌리잎은 여러 장이 모여나며, 난형 또는 삼각상 난형으로 길이 15~70cm, 폭 12~50cm, 가장자리는 물결 모양이다. 잎자루는 길며, 자줏빛이 돈다. 줄기잎은 뿌리잎보다 작으며, 밑부분이 줄기를 반쯤 감싼다. 꽃은 5~6월에 피며, 줄기 끝에서 원추꽃차례로 달리고 흰빛 또는 노란빛이 도는 녹색이다. 열매는 수과이고 능선이 3개 있다. 우리나라 전역에서 재배한다. 러시아, 중국을 비롯하여 아시아, 유럽 등지에서 재배한다. 뿌리는 약재나 염료로 사용한다.
