산지의 사면과 계곡의 습한 곳, 길가, 논밭 등에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 높이 30~80cm이다. 원줄기는 곧게 서고 원주형이며 줄이 있고, 녹색 또는 홍자색을 띠며 신맛이 난다. 뿌리잎은 모여나며 장타원형으로 길이 3~6cm, 폭 1~2cm이다. 줄기잎은 어긋나며, 피침형 또는 긴 타원형이고 아랫부분의 잎은 잎자루가 있으나 위로 갈수록 없어지면서 원줄기를 감싼다. 턱잎은 잎집 같고 얇다. 꽃은 암수딴그루이고 5~6월에 붉은빛을 띤 녹색으로 피며, 원줄기 끝에 달리는 원추꽃차례의 가지에서 돌려난다. 꽃자루는 짧고, 녹갈색이다. 꽃받침잎은 6개이고 꽃잎은 없다. 수꽃은 수술이 6개이고 꽃밥은 황색이며 밑으로 처진다. 암꽃은 3개의 암술대가 있으며 잘게 갈라진 암술머리는 홍자색이다. 꽃이 진 다음 안쪽 꽃받침잎 3개는 길이 5mm 정도 자라서 둥글게 되어 열매를 둘러싸고, 뒷면에 그물 모양의 소맥이 있다. 열매는 수과이고 세모난 타원형으로 길이 2mm 정도이고 흑갈색이며 윤채가 있다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 전 세계에 분포한다. 수영은 잎이 긴 화살 모양으로 그 기부가 귓불 모양으로 볼록하게 돌출된 부분이 아래를 향하고 있으나 애기수영의 잎은 창검 모양으로 그 기부에 볼록하게 돌출된 부분이 옆을 향하고 있으므로 다르다. 또 수영은 화피 조각이 열매가 익어감에 따라 커진다. 연한 줄기와 잎은 식용하며, 뿌리는 약용한다.
