유럽 원산의 여러해살이풀로 전국의 물기가 많은 곳에서 자란다. 줄기는 높이 60-120cm이다. 밑동의 잎은 모여 나고, 긴 타원형으로 길이 20-30cm, 너비 8-15cm이다. 줄기잎은 피침형, 긴 피침상 타원형으로 길이 10cm쯤이다. 꽃은 6-8월에 연한 녹색으로 피며, 윤생하는 꽃들이 총상으로 늘어선다. 꽃자루는 가늘며, 화피보다 길다. 열매는 붉게 익으며, 세모지고, 능선에 돌기가 있다. 사료로 사용하고, 어린순은 식용한다. [저작재산권자]
