유라시아 원산의 귀화식물이며 개울가, 습지, 습한 들판, 연못가 등에서 키 80~120cm가량 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추 자라고 굵은 세로홈이 많이 나 있다. 뿌리에서 나온 잎과 줄기 아래 부분의 잎에는 긴 잎자루가 있다. 잎은 난형 또는 긴 타원형으로 길이 10~20cm, 너비 3~7cm로서 끝은 뾰족한 예두, 기부는 심장저이며 가장자리는 물결 모양이다. 줄기 아래 부분의 잎은 잎자루가 짧고 잎몸은 긴 타원형인데 아래의 잎보다 좁고 작다. 꽃은 6~7월에 피는데 총상꽃차례를 이루고 꽃싸개잎이 있거나 없다. 작은꽃자루는 길이 8~10mm로서 화피는 6개인데 3개씩 두 줄로 놓이며 누런 밤색이다. 바깥쪽 화피는 타원형, 안쪽 화피는 둥근 심장형이며 가장자리는 거의 매끈하다. 수술은 6개, 암술대는 3개이다. 열매는 수과로서 길이 3mm, 너비 1.2mm 정도, 7월에 익으며 예리하게 세모난 모양이고, 능선은 3개이며, 이 중에서 한군데에서만 돌기가 난다. 우리나라 중부 이북에 귀화하여 나며, 북반구 온대 등에 분포한다. 열매의 능선 3개 중에서 한 군데에서만 돌기가 나는 특징으로 뚜렷이 소리쟁이와 구분된다. 어린순과 줄기는 식용하며, 뿌리는 약용한다. 부령소루장이, 부령송구지라고도 한다.
