깊은 산 숲속에 나는 낙엽활엽 덩굴식물로 길이 10m에 이른다. 줄기 골 속은 갈색 계단 모양이고, 어린 가지에는 잔털이 있고, 피목이 뚜렷하다. 잎은 어긋나며 넓은 난형, 넓은 타원형 또는 타원형으로 길이 6-12cm, 너비 3.5-7.0cm이다. 꽃은 암수딴그루로 5-6월에 3-10개씩 취산꽃차례를 이루어 피며, 흰색, 지름 2cm이다. 열매는 장과이며, 길이 2.5cm 정도이고, 10월에 황록색으로 익는다. 한국, 일본, 중국, 극동 러시아에도 분포한다. [저작재산권자]
