햇빛이 드는 산지의 숲 가장자리나 풀밭에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 가지가 갈라지기도 하고, 높이 50~120cm다. 잎은 마주나며, 피침형, 길이 5~10cm, 폭 1~3cm다. 잎끝은 뾰족하고, 밑은 심장 모양으로 되어 줄기를 감싼다. 꽃은 6~8월에 줄기와 가지 끝의 취산꽃차례에 피며, 노란색, 지름 4~6cm다. 꽃자루는 1~3cm다. 꽃받침은 5장, 길이 1cm쯤, 크기가 서로 다르다. 꽃잎은 낫 모양의 넓은 난형, 길이 2.5~3.0cm다. 수술은 많으며, 보통 5개의 뭉치로 된다. 암술대는 가운데 부분까지 5갈래로 갈라지지만 변이가 있다. 열매는 삭과이며, 난형, 길이 12~18mm다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국, 베트남, 일본, 몽골, 러시아, 북아메리카 동부 등에 분포한다. 고추나물에 비해서 수술은 5개의 뭉치로 되며, 암술대가 5개이고, 꽃은 더욱 크므로 구분된다. 어린잎은 식용하며, 뿌리, 잎, 종자를 약용한다. 관상용으로 심는다.
